The Africa Regional Office (PPD ARO)

The PPD ARO links 14 African countries who are members of PPD. The organization works through three strategies:

  1. Policy dialogue;
  2. Networking and building strategic partnerships in the region; and
  3. Sharing of experiences and good practices.

A few weeks ago, on 8 March, the world celebrated International Women's Day, which serves as a clarion call to honor girls' and women's contributions to their families, communities and nations. As our global population swells to over 7 billion, we must heed this call by working to ensure that every girl and woman lives a long, healthy and happy life.

World Population Day

Today, July 11, is World population Day and the celebrations in Uganda will be held in Kayunga district under the theme Uganda at 33 Million, Time to Act. Dr. Jotham Musinguzi, the Regional Director, Partners in Population and Development Africa Regional Office (PPD ARO) said that the theme is asking the government and people what they are going to do about the already existent population.

Time for Uganda to prioritize family planning investments

Facing severe budget shortfalls at home, many donor countries are considering—or already implementing—cutbacks in their foreign aid programmes. This includes support for crucial international family planning programmes. For example, the United States, the global leader in supporting contraceptive services in the world’s poorest countries, reduced its 2011 international family planning and reproductive health assistance by $33 million. In the face of this new reality, Uganda must step up its own funding for family planning—not just because the donor community is stepping back, but because it is in Uganda’s own self-interest to do so. The time to act is now.
